(in)RL in Pictures

When I hear the front door latch turn and the clomp-clomp of combat boots on wood floors, I know my man is home. And after a kiss and a “Hey baby. How was your day?” I can count on him shooting me a second question:

“Did you talk to anybody today?”

And I’m sure-fire certain he likes it when I answer yes, because then he knows his verbose wife won’t barrage him with a torrent of words. Because for every 1000 words my man speaks, I speak about 5ooo. Ish. He also insists that when I’ve been able to talk with other people during the day, I’m in a happier mood. And apparently, happier Kristen is more fun to live with.

Which is why he was totally down with me having people over for a tea party, an (in)RL tea party.

I sure love me some pretty decorations!

Friends I’ve known for a long time and for just a little while came over Saturday. We talked and laughed and encouraged and ate goodies and drank tea. I got to use up at least 20,000 words all within a few hours!

This is me with Trisha and Audra. Trisha is a lovely friend I’ve known since Maui. Her family must think the Strongs are stalking them because we’ve followed them on the last four moves. Crazy! And I was introduced to Audra only recently by our mutual friend Jessica {a.k.a. the girl who knows everyone on God’s green earth}. Audra used to live in Nashville but moved to Colorado Springs about  year ago. Nashville’s loss is Colorado’s gain~Audra is beautiful and just as sweet as she can be.

These are three of my four home girls. Our kids all go to the same school and we do Bible study together. Raquel {on the left} has the sweetest disposition EVER and is as warm as they come. Rebecca has been my beautiful BFF since the Albuquerque days, and I would be a complete mess without her. When a parenting dilemma finds me, I usually ask myself, “What would Rebecca do?” Denise {on the right} is one of the smartest gals I’ve ever met, and she is a talented writer, too. Michelle is also in our posse, but I didn’t get this picture ’til after she left. Boo on me. Michelle is one of those wonders who is the ultimate get-the-job-done-er. Another great example of mom, wife, and friend.

It was so fun to have hometown girl Sally at my casa. I’ve read her books and her blog for quite sometime, and she is just about the best mom-encourager out there. If you ever start to feel mothering is unglamorous and nothing special, drop everything and read Sally. In one fell swoop, she’ll show you how this mothering thing is the holiest of callings *and* make you feel like a rock star. Lisa, another Albuquerque bestie, took this photo, and I realize I forgot to get a picture with her, too. Double boo on me. Lisa, whose husband has been deployed more times than I can count, is a mix of spice and joy. She’s the effervescent lightbulb to any soiree, and I just love her.

Part of our time was spent watching video content prepared by the (in)courage writers and DaySpring folks. And because DaySpring is chock full of the awesome sauce, they are packaging a 2 DVD disc set and study booklet over here.  They will be available May 14th with a special discount code for all (in)RL attendees.

Kinda cool, dontcha think?

The only bummer part of the day was that *you* couldn’t join us. Maybe next time, k?

Have a wonderful week, girlfriends. I sure love and appreciate each and every one of you reader-darlings. You are the best and then some!

Because She’s Already Amazing {plus a sweet giveaway!}

Amazingness galore :: Cheryl, Jen *and* Mary

*Giveaway now closed.*

Her graciousness struck me from our first meeting, and what a first meeting it was. Mary, looking totally darling with her thick, dark hair swinging in a pony tail, and me looking totally not darling with primary colored birthday cake frosting smeared. all. over. my chest, face, and hair. {I later realized I even had frosting on my back. How? I’ll never know.}  Unfazed by my disheveled appearance, Mary introduces herself and welcomes us to the Juniper Court neighborhood.  We schedule a playdate for our same-aged toddlers, and so begins a friendship that has spanned a plethera of mountain top and valley moments together.

 Goodness, how did Mary serve and love on me during those babies crying, husband traveling, crazy exhausting days? Let me count the ways. She babysat my kids, cooked us meals, hosted Bible study, introduced me to MOPS, and invited me to every soiree she attended. When I went on bedrest while pregnant with my daughter, she regularly checked on me and even brought me groceries. {With extra fun stuff not on my list like ice cream and chocolate!} Even more than all the serving, Mary encouraged me as a wife and mom. We haven’t been neighbors for almost ten years, but Mary still inspires through word and example every bit as much as she did during the Juniper Court days. Her arm must hurt from giving me countless I’m-there-with-ya-and-you’re-doing-great pats on the back.

While I’ve witnessed Mary’s lovely, Spirit-led nature over and over, I’ve never seen it so visible as when sorrow shows up on her doorstep . In this last eighteen months alone, Mary’s story includes an ectopic pregnancy, her husband’s deployment, her mother’s stroke and sudden death, a major move across the country, and the loss of a son. While she has walked the hardest of the hard roads, Mary still lives with hands open and eyes toward heaven. She lives the hard faith that proves genuine.

And so every time the gentle, stirring words and music of  “When Emptiness Sings” drift towards me, I think of Mary. She is indeed an amazing wonder who keeps her bow on the strings ready to play the song God orchestrates.

{subscribers, click here for video.}

But oh,

Her bow is on the strings,

And the tune resonates in the open space

To show us how emptiness sings.

Glory to God, Glory to God!

In fullness of wisdom,

He writes my story into his song,

My life for the glory of God.

Chorus of “How Emptiness Sings” by Christa Wells

Now I know Mary, and she will read this and say, “Oh Kristen, but you don’t really know me. You don’t know all the times I haven’t handled the easy and hard things well. The times I still don’t.”

And I’d just look into her dark brown eyes and say,  ”But Mary, God doesn’t expect perfection from you, only perseverance in the process. And because you do this – and a thousand other things – so imperfectly wonderfully, you are already amazing.”

“The moments you lived in your strengths, the challenges you pushed through, the ways you made a difference – they’ll all be something beautiful that you can give the One who gave everything for you.” Holley Gerth, You’re Already Amazing

{I’d also add, “And thank you Mary for not finding my frantic, frosting-covered self totally bizarre and weird. Amen.}

I’m gushing about Mary today in honor of a surprise book shower for Holley Gerth {another already amazing woman}. Her book, You’re Already Amazing, is available now at DaySpring, Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Today, several of Holley’s friends are conspiring to surprise her with stories of those women in our lives who are already amazing. And if there’s one thing Holley loves, it’s her sisters lovin’ on each other by spreading around some major Jesus truth.

You're Already Amazing: Embracing Who You Are, Becoming All God Created You to Be

Isn’t she just the prettiest cover you’ve ever seen?

Speaking of major Jesus truth, Holley’s book is chock-full of it. God has used Holley’s blog and books to grow my faith over and over, so I knew I’d love this book, too. Really love it. But honestly, I didn’t know I’d really really love it this much. As in, it’s one of my all time favorite nonfiction reads. You’re Already Amazing isn’t your typical inspiring, biblically based book. While it certainly encourages my faith walk, it also gives practical ways to move biblical truths from my head to my heart, to accept them in all the deep places. And as a licensed counselor, Holley’s knowledge of why we women think and feel the way we do {the way God wired us} makes this read just plain fascinating.

Gettin’ my Holley love on.

Visit Holley’s place today and read more stories of amazing women *and* link up your own! Not a blog writing chica? Then maybe facebook or tweet a little love note about someone you think is da bomb diggedy. Better yet, tell her to her darling little face.

Finally, what’s a shower without presents? Because I so adore this book and  wholeheartedly believe in its message, I’m giving away *two* copies of Holley’s You’re Already Amazing, one for you and one for a special loved one in your life. And also? You’ll have your pick of your fave Holley Gerth canvas print, some of which are pictured below.

To be entered to win, just leave a comment telling me what already amazing woman will be receiving your second book. I’ll announce the winner on Thursday, March 15th. {And while I do write for DaySpring’s blog (in)courage, I was not compensated for this review or giveaway. I just think Holley’s newest book is totally swell.} And if you’re interested in discussing You’re Already Amazing in a book club setting, check this out.
Hot diggedy! Not bad for a Monday, right?

When You Need to Know You Belong

Did I ever tell y’all I was Miss Arkansas 1991? It’s true.

Well, sorta.

Actually, I was Miss Arkansas band camp.

Not quite the same, I suppose? Well, you already know I play oboe, so my I’m-just-a-big-nerd-and-always-have-been secret isn’t really a secret, now is it.

In high school, we band kids knew all the band-geek jokes and where we fell on the popularity totem pole. We couldn’t have cared less, and you know why? Because we belonged, and band was our catalyst for belonging. We were individual as snowflakes, but we shared a common interest and built a little community around it. I’ve seen the same thing in school classrooms, sports teams, and military squadrons. The team spirit sparks genuine camaraderie and friendships, and there’s no denying the sense of belonging felt by its members.

Since getting married, I’ve lived in ten neighborhoods across five states {and one ocean}. Not that many for a military family, but enough to see all kinds of friendship seasons. Sometimes friendships formed quickly, sometimes they took their sweet time. When I’ve been blessed to have close-knit community, there’s no doubt the sense of belonging makes my soul sing.

I want that same sense of belonging in my map dot home of Colorado Springs. I bet many of you want this in your neck of the woods, too. Do you know who else wants this for you? The folks of (in)courage. This is why they are pouring their heart and soul into something called (in)RL.

What is (in)RL? First of all, it’s short for in real life. (in)courage thrives on building relationships that bless you in your day to day, and they want (in)RL to be the catalyst that sparks new friendships in your own zip codes. So, in an effort to encourage us to form near and dear friendships, (in)courage dreamt  up (in)RL. Think of it as one giant excuse to get together {and gab} and hang out {without worrying about our hang-ups}.

If you want to take part in this global meet-up on a local scale, you have two options:

1. Host a meet-up in your home, at Starbucks, or wherever suits your fancy.

2. Attend a meet-up that is already happening in your area.

There is a $10 registration fee  that includes a T-shirt and Simply Marvelous card pack. {FYI ~ (in)RL is not a money-making venture for DaySpring. The registration fee simply covers the price of those two items.} A community keynote will kick off Friday night, and then Saturday will be the get-together part. There will be additional videos available for viewing if you or your host so desires.

If you’re a visual learner like me and want more insight into this whole crazy-beautiful notion, peek at the videos below. They feature several of the (in)courage writers {including yours truly in the second one}.

For more enlightenment into (in)RL, *please* read Deidra’s article from yesterday and Jessica’s tomorrow. Both these darling women are master encouragers and write tenderly and eloquently about friendships and community.

If you’ve visited here for 5 minutes, you know I get how hard it can be to make friends. It feels messy and tricky. But maybe – just maybe – (in)RL could be the catalyst that removes these scary parts so your heart feels free to connect with new folks.

I love you ladies so much. If you live in the Colorado Springs vicinity, please stop by my own meet-up! And in the comments below, feel free to ask more questions about (in)RL. I’ll do my best to answer {although you may find some of them answered in this Q and A about (in)RL }. Also, what do you find to be the most difficult thing about forming new friendships? The most difficult thing about maintaining established friendships?

My Love Affair

A mushy gushy sanguine like me loves her some meaningful gifts. And folks, DaySpring never fails to deliver. And I’m not just saying that because of my kinship with their (in)courage team. I’ve had a not-so-secret love affair with DaySpring well before they ever heard of moi.

Their goodies serve up a main dish of beautiful and inspirational with a hearty side of functional.

Ever-grateful memo board with easel.

“As for me and my house…” Blessings Unlimited Tray

Yum to-the me.

(And pssst…right now DaySpring offers FREE shipping with code ship25 when you spend $25 or more.}

{And double pssst…DaySpring currently has several Christmas goodies on clearance as well as some bangin’ October deals. You’re welcome.}

Did you know each month (in)courage sponsors a sweet (in)spired deal? This month, it’s the Recordable Storybooks. This gift literally demonstrates how the spoken Word releases God’s power to build super power faith. And if you don’t believe me, then read how my 8 year old girl proved it.

Happy fall, y’all.
